Day 1 Outline: Working with Challenging Clients

This workshop is designed for therapists, clinical case managers, and other clinical staff, who work with clients in a wide variety of challenging situations.  This workshop will review the basics of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy with a focus on precision of language. Tricks and tips will be presented to ensure questions are purposeful and intentionally matched to each unique client.

Application of Solution-Focused Practice with those struggling with psychosis, externally motivated clients, and many other scenarios will be explored.  Discussion, demonstrations, and practice are the primary methods of teaching.

Participants are encouraged to bring questions and cases to discuss. During the workshop I will explore topics such as: what is a “Challenging Situation”, what Works, Areas of Growth, Goals, a Fresh Look at Solution Focused Brief Therapy, tips and Tricks, the Precision of Language and the necessity of Future Focus Questions/Goal Formation.

 

Day 2 Outline: Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Addiction

The second day of the workshop is designed for therapists, clinical case managers, and other clinical staff, who work with clients who are misusing alcohol or other substances. It provides a solid review of the fundamentals of Solution Focused Brief Therapy while placing special emphasis on the unique factors that are in play when working with this population.

This course is specifically designed to ensure clinical professionals can leave the workshop and effectively implement these skills with challenging clients managing an addiction. During the workshop I will explore topics such as: What Works Using Solution Focused Brief Therapy concepts with Addiction, Exploration of Areas of Growth/Goals, Discussion of Theories of Addiction, What One Knows vs. Wishes, creating a Future Focus and the Application of Solution Focused Brief Therapy in a case of a client with substance misuse.

Day 1 Aims and Outcomes of the workshop:

  • Demonstrate the ability to think from a system’s perspective and use this perspective to identify a common goal
  • Understand the keep/delete concept and how to purposefully select client words to build a Solution Focused conversation regardless of presenting issue
  • Understand how using select physics principles resolves common difficulties in client sessions
  • Identify three concrete tools that would be most effective in their work setting that they can immediately begin using with clients

Day 2 Aims and Outcomes of the workshop:

  • Demonstrate the ability to think from a system’s perspective and use this perspective to identify a common goal
  • Understand how Solution Focused Brief Therapy is different from the commonly used approaches for treating addiction and why Solution Focused Brief Therapy is effective with this population
  • Understand how Solution Focused Brief Therapy views the concepts of “denial” and “resistance” and why this different view is effective with this population
  • Understand the concept of neutrality and the role it plays when working with clients who struggle with addictive behaviours
